Abuja, Jan. 29, 2024 – Shehu Sani, a human rights activist and former lawmaker, has decried the withdrawal of three countries from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Three countries, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, on Sunday announced their withdrawal from the regional organisation, ECOWAS, due to the severe sanctions imposed on them by the regional bloc for overthrowing constitutional governments in their countries.

Reacting to the development through his X handle, Sanni described the development as a setback for ECOWAS.

Sanni wrote: “The Withdrawal of Mali, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso from Ecowas is a serious setback for West Africa.

“It signifies the failure of diplomacy and dialogue. We lost our African blood brothers because of our Western conditional friends.

“We sacrificed our hands to keep our wristwatches.” (GBN)
