Wigwe’s Death: Tinubu, Fubara condole with Nigerians

Abuja, Feb. 11, 2024 – President Bola Tinubu has condoled with the Nigerian business community on the tragic death of Herbert Wigwe in a helicopter crash in the United States on Friday night.

Also killed in the air crash were the Wigwe’s wife, Chizoba, their son, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, a former executive of Nigerian Stock Exchange and helicopter crew members.

Ajuri Ngelale, the Presidential Spokesman, in a statement on Sunday, said Tinubu described the incident as “an overwhelming tragedy that is shocking beyond comprehension.”

“After receiving an official confirmation of events, President Bola Tinubu receives with shock and deep distress the news of the passing of Mr. Herbert Wigwe, top banker and entrepreneur, and Mr. Abimbola Ogunbanjo, OFR, former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, along with members of the Wigwe family.

“President Tinubu mourns these exceptional Nigerian business leaders and describes their passing as ‘an overwhelming tragedy that is shocking beyond comprehension’.

“The President condoles with the Wigwe and Ogunbanjo families, the business community, and all those impacted by this harrowing incident.

“President Tinubu prays for the peaceful repose of the departed and asks God Almighty to comfort the multitude of Nigerians who are grieving and the families of the deceased at this deeply agonizing moment”, the statement said.

Similarly, Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has also issued a condolence message to the people of the state and Nigerians in general, urging them to maintain the peace and order.

In a post on his official X account @SimFubaraKSC, Fubara said people should pray for his Wigwe’s family.

“We just received the sad news of the air disaster in California involving our compatriot Dr. @HerbertOWigwe, his wife and son.

“While we await the true report of the situation, we urge our people to remain calm as we continue to pray for him and the entire family.”  (GBN)
