Abuja, June, 7, 2023 – Goerge Akume , a former Benue State Governor and Senator, has been sworn-in as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) by President Bola Tinubu.
Akume took the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office on Wednesday at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Dignitaries at the event were the Vice-President Kashim Shettima, some serving and former governors and the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan.
They included Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr (Mrs) Folasade Yemi-Esan and Mrs Regina Akume, George’s wife.
Akume was announced as the Secretary to the Government on Friday along with Femi Gbajabiamila, who was appointed the Chief of Staff to the President and Sen. Ibrahim Hadejia, who was appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff.
Akume was born on Dec. 27, 1953 in the Wannune Tarka Local Council in Benue State.
He had a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Ibadan in 1978 and a Master’s degree in Industrial and Labour Relations (MLR) from the same university in 1986.
Akume was a former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he contested and became a governor of Benue State from May 1999 to May 2007.
He was the first governor to have completed two-term in office in Benue State.
Akume later defected to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and became s Senator representing Benue North West senatorial district.
The former governor was the Chairman Senate Committee on Army during his political period in the Red Chamber.
In 2019, he lost his Senatorial seat to Senator Orke Jev of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
George was appointed as the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs by former President Muhammadu Buhari on 21st August 2019. (GBN)
