Tinubu meets with Okonjo-Iweala

Abuja, Aug. 8, 2023 – President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday received Prof. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Abuja.

Speaking after her meeting with the president, Okonjo-Iweala told journalists that her meeting with President Bola Tinubu was aimed at reducing the economic hardship facing Nigerians.

She said her “quiet visit”, which was not an official WTO mission, focused on how to support Nigerians at such a time of need.

“We all know that things are very difficult for Nigerians outside; everyone is struggling. I’m here myself on a quiet visit. 

“So, this was not really an official WTO mission but we were able to engage with Mr President to talk about ‘what are the kinds of programmes that could be put in place to make sure that the suffering of Nigerians are being alleviated’”

Okonjo-Iweala was Nigeria’s Finance Minister between 2003 and 2006 under President Olusegun Obasanjo.

She spent a 25-years in the World Bank where she rose the position of Managing Director.

Okonjo-Iweala is currently the Director-General of WTO.

She is a Professor of Economics. (GBN)
