Bissau (Guinea-Bissau), July 9, 2022 – President Bola Tinubu has been appointed the Chairman of Authority of the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Tinubu is attending the meeting of the ECOWAS leaders for the first time.
His appointment was announced on Sunday while attending the 63rd Ordinary Session of ECOWAS in Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau.
Tinubu is taking took over from President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau.
In his inaugural address, Tinubu promised to work closely with member states, regional institutions, and international partners to implement initiatives aimed at promoting economic growth, regional trade integration, and social development.
He said there was the need to protect the democratic culture in the sub-region.
“We will need take democracy more seriously. Democracy is very tough, but it is the best form of government,” he said. (GBN)
