Abuja, Jan. 12, 2024 – The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the election of Abba Yusuf as the duly elected governor of Kano State.

The apex court, sitting in Abuja, set aside the verdicts of the Court of Appeal and Kano Election Petitions Tribunal that nullified the victory of Yusuf in the March 18, 2023 governorship poll.

The five-man panel unanimously held that the lower court misunderstood the import of the purported deduction of 165,616 ballot papers in favour of Governor Yusuf.

Justice John Okoro, who read the judgement, said the Court of Appeal was wrong in affirming the decision of the tribunal which held that Yusuf did not win the majority of lawful votes cast at the Governorship Election.

“This court has consistently maintained that the issue of nomination or sponsorship of a candidate for an election is completely an exclusive prerogative of the political party,” he said. (GBN)
