Nigeria’s Consul General condoles with Prof. Omotoso’s family

Johannesburg, July 29, 2023 –  Andrew Idi, Nigeria’s Consul General in South Africa, has condoled with the family of the late Nigerian literary icon, Prof. Bankole Omotoso, who died on July 19, 2023.

Omotoso, also known as “Kole Omotoso’’, was a Nigerian writer and intellectual best known for his works of fiction and in South Africa as the “Yebo Gogo man’’ in adverts for the telecommunications company, Vodacom.

Idi paid a condolence visit to the Omotosho’s family accompanied by a Minister from the Consulate, Amb. Emmanuel Oguntoye, and other dignitaries,

The delegation was received by the eldest son of the family, Akin Omotoso, and other family members.

The delegation expressed their heartfelt sympathy, support and encouragement, while praising the late icon’s positive contributions to South Africa through his literary works.

In addition to the personal visit, Idi also shared a condolence message addressed to the family which conveyed profound sadness from the Consulate General of Nigeria and the entire Nigerian community in South Africa,

He said the Consulate received the news of the passing of an illustrious and highly revered compatriot with shock and hailed the late professor as an accomplished literary icon.

Idi said he recognised Omotosho’s unwavering commitment to the betterment of society, promotion of social justice and dedication to the service of humanity as well as the late professor’s significant contributions to cultural exchanges and cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa. (GBN)
