Washington, Aug. 12, 2023 – Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, has commended Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for their role in checkmating Niger’s military leadership and restoring constitutional order in Niger Republic.

In a post on his private handle on X, (Twitter), Blinken praised Tinubu’s leadership of ECOWAS in what he described as shared efforts with the U.S. to remove the military leaders in Niger from power.

Blinken had tweeted: “Spoke to Nigerian President Tinubu to commend his leadership of the Economic Community of West African States and discussed shared efforts to restore constitutional order in Niger.”

ECOWAS’ efforts and plan to deploy military in the Niger Republic leadership crisis paid off on Sunday when the coup leaders yielded to meet ECOWAS to discuss ways of resolving the crises amicably.

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, who is incidentally the Chairman of ECOWAS was widely criticized at home for allegedly playing to the gallery in his attempt to divert Nigeria’s resources to a needless war. (GBN)
