Ghazouani, President of Mauritania, elected African Union Chairman

Addis Ababa, Feb. 17, 2024 – Mohammed Ould Ghazouani, the President of Mauritania, has been elected the new Chairman of the African Union for 2024.

Heads of State and Government in member states of the African Union (AU) elected him on Saturday at the ongoing 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

 Ghazouani is taking over from President Azali Assoumani of the Union of Comoros, who was the Chairperson for 2023.  (GBN)
