Final year student of OAU mobbed to death for stealing phone

Ile-Ife, April 12, 2023-A final year student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, was reportedly beaten to death over theft of a mobile phone.

The student, whose identity has not been ascertained, was said to have stolen a mobile phone at Awo Hall of the institution on Monday and was brutalized before he was rushed to the University OAU Teaching Hospital where he was confirmed dead on Tuesday when he was brought to the hospital.

Abiodun Olarewaju, the Univeristy Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, saying: “A student died and the management is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“We will make our position known after investigation.”

Folahan Olayiwola,, the President of University Students’ Union, also issued  a statement on the development, saying: “I regret to announce the death of a Part 5 student assaulted in a mob action at Awo Hall yesterday (Monday).

“The student was declared dead on arrival at the Emergency Medicine Department of OAU Teaching Hospital this (Tuesday) afternoon.

“Preliminary investigations show that the deceased was accused to have stolen a phone.

“While we await an official report from the law enforcement agencies, I must state that this incident is a very sad one for Great Ife Students’ Union because our union is not a union of barbarians but that of intellectuals,” he said. (GBN)
