Ibadan, Sept 4, 2023 – A federal government delegation, led by t Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, visited the family of Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian national flag on Monday.
Akinkumi died in Ibadan at the age of 84.
“We are here to console the family on behalf of Mr. President. Pa Akinkunmi’s role cannot be forgotten.
“The president, Bola Tinubu, received the news of the demise to the world beyond, and therefore, directed this delegation led by me to come to the family here in Ibadan and to tell them that the whole Nigerians share in their grief and also to tell them that Nigeria will forever be grateful for his contribution and national existence.
“Perhaps, when he was designing the national flag he did not
know how powerful it would be as a symbol of peace and unity that all of us pray for in his country.
“It is a symbol that we are yet to find a replacement for. He designed it when he was in his 20s and he lived for more than 60 years after he designed it.
“Mr. President received the news of his death. We want to identify with the family and the people of Oyo State.
“We came to tell them that the Federal Government identify with them and the people of the state and to say that the Nigerian government will stand by them,” the minister said. (GBN)
