Court grants Emefiele N300m bail for illegally printing N684m naira notes

Abuja, May 15, 2024 – Godwin Emefiele, the embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been granted a fresh N300 million bail by an Abuja Federal High Court after he pleaded not guilty to the charge of illegally printing new naira notes.

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Emefiele for illegally printing N684.5 million worth of new naira notes at the cost of N18.96 billion.

Emefiele, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Justice Maryann Anenih granted him the bail and ordered him to produce two sureties who must each possess titled property in the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The court also ordered him to deposit his travel documents with the court and should not travel outside the country without the permission of the court. (GBN)
