Lagos, Jan. 19, 2023 – Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says the apex bank has waived some of the conditions for accessing the new bank notes by commercial banks.
He said this at a sensitisation tour on the redesigned naira notes at Computer Village, Ikeja in Lagos.
Emefiele was represented by CBN Director of Legal Services Department, Mr Kofo Salam-Alada,Â
He said that, before now, commercial banks were given slots, but the CBN had bended over backwards to accommodate the banks’ demands.
Emefiele said that the CBN had approached banks to come forward to pick the new notes after waving all conditions to accessing the redesigned currency.
He said that the apex bank was monitoring the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to know whether they were dispensing the new notes.
The CBN governor said that any commercial bank that failed to pick the new notes would be penalised.
He also said any bank that failed to lodge new notes into their ATMs will attract fines. (GBN)
