Abuja, Sept. 9, 2024 – The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has appealed to the federal and state governments to use the new N70,000 minimum wage to compute emoluments of pensioners.
Godwin Abumis, the National President of NUP, made the appeal at a press conference in Abuja on Monday.
He said the economic reforms of the government had led to higher prices of food items, adding that pensioners and other vulnerable groups were the worst hit by the increasing cost of living.
“We are groaning and wallowing in abject poverty, and this is worsened by the avoidable incessant fuel increase that has rendered our paltry monthly pensions useless.
“Pensioners have no one in government to speak for them, and the only voice they have which is the NUP is often neglected by the authorities
“Nigerians and pensioners alike are daily crying for freedom from this enslavement and exploitation. Our patience is overtaxed.”
Abumis also decried the failure of the Federal Government to pay the N25,000 monthly stipend promised pensioners as palliatives.
He said that it would be discriminatory for government to approve 110% salary increase for workers and give less to pensioners. (GBN)
