Lagos, Feb. 3, 2023 – The Apongbon Bridge in Lagos will be reopened to traffic in May after the completion of the rehabilitation works.
The bridge was destroyed in May 2022 by a fire that burnt all the illegal shops built under it.
Umar Bakare, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, announced this in Lagos on Friday.
He said the project had already achieved 50 percent completion, adding that the contractor was currently replacing the bearings.
Bakare said the contract for the comprehensive repairs of the Eko Bridge had a completion period of 43 months which would lapse in 2025, adding that the comprehensive rehabilitation project was about 15 per cent completed.
He said necessary tests were being carried out to ensure Apongbon Bridge was solid and safe, adding that measures towards safeguarding all Lagos bridges against abuse were also ongoing.
Bakare said the Federal Ministry of Works was collaborating with the Lagos State Government and compiling illegal activities under bridges.
He said that recommendations were being made to its headquarters in Abuja on how to rid the bridges in Lagos of illegal occupants causing damage to the public infrastructure. (GBN)
