Onitsha, Nov. 29, 2022 – Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State says the state government will enact laws and take other measures to reduce fire outbreaks in the state.
Soludo said this on Tuesday at the scene of a fire incident on Kano Street beside the Main Market in Onitsha.
The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Onyekachukwu Ibezim, advised traders to always insure their goods to reduce effects of fire incidents at markets.
He said the visit was to physically assess the extent of damage and offer advice on preventive measures.
Soludo thanked God that no life was lost with a promise that a meeting between the state government and market leaders would be convened to seek for permanent solutions.
“If it means every trader at Main Market will have fire extinguishers in their shops, we will put it as a law and enforce compliance. An immediate emergency training must be conducted.
“How many traders have insurance? I have always asked this question. Insurance helps to cushion effect of this nature,” he said.
Soludo said it was unfortunate that fire had become an annual occurrence in the state and expressed optimism that such would not occur, especially during the festive seasons.
The governor lamented the existence of illegal structures in market places. (GBN)
