Lagos, Dec. 24, 2024 – Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), has advised telecom companies to reduce electronic wastes generated by ICT tools.
Maida gave the advice recently in Lagos at the 2023 ITREALMS E-Waste Dialogue.
He was represented by Dr. Lawal Bello, the NCC Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity.
Maida said this advice became imperative because of tremendous changes and developments going on in the ICT environment.
He said Nigeria stood to benefit more by taking conscious measures to reduce electronic wastes generated by ICT tools and equipment.
“This will not only save the country’s expenditure, but also less e-waste to manage,” he said.
The NCC boss stressed that there were lots of benefits and opportunities inherent in taking conscious efforts of reducing electronic wastes as well recycling ICT equipment.
He said by recycling telecom equipment would reduce carbon dioxide emissions, save energy, and prevent e-wastes from polluting the environment.
“It can also generate value for telcos by reusing, repairing, or reselling hardware and devices,” he said.
Maida advised telecoms companies in Nigeria to promote recycling and circularity of ICT equipment as UK Vodafone’s internal asset marketplace which allowed operators to repurpose excess or decommissioned hardware.
He also said telecom companies could also device trade-in programmes to encourage customers to return their old devices for recycling or refurbishment. (GBN)
