Lagos, Oct. 16, 2024 – At least 94 persons have been confirmed dead following a petrol tanker explosion along the Kano-Hadejia expressway in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Thursday.
Lawal Shiisu, the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, in a voice note sent to journalists, confirmed the unfortunate event that has also left other 50 people injured.
The police authorities said the fire was ignited after some residents of the community tried to swoop petrol from the tanker that fell off the road.
The flame was said to spread rapidly, causing extensive damage and overwhelming emergency services in the area.
The police said rescue and recovery operations were underway.
Some of those that survived the inferno are currently receiving treatment at the Ringim General Hospital.Â
