Abuja, July 23, 2025 – The Senate has passed a bill to establish the Federal Oil and Gas Hospital in Benikrukru in Delta State.
The bill, which seeks to establish a hospital to provide comprehensive medical care for oil and gas workers and affected communities, was sponsored by Sen. Joel Thomas (APC-Delta).
The passage of the bill on Tuesday followed the presentation of the report by the Senate Committee on Health by its Chairman, Sen. Banigo Ipalibo Harry (PDP-Rivers).
Harry said oil and gas workers and host communities were facing numerous hazards from exploration activities.
She listed some of the challenges to include terminal illnesses, cancer, and injuries requiring expert medical care and occupational health services.
Harry said the neglect of these groups had fuelled agitation in the Niger Delta, affecting national development.
She said the hospital would offer vital medical services to workers and host communities in the oil and gas sector.
Harry said the proposed hospital would be built within communities hosting extensive oil exploration activities
She said this would ensure unhindered access by patients seeking quality healthcare, including emergency services and occupational health.
The hospital will also reduce delays in treatment and improve response time for medical cases.
Harry urged the Senate to pass the bill, given its importance to public health and regional stability.
The Senate, after clause-by-clause consideration, passed the bill.
