11 inmates set free from Enugu Correctional centre

Enugu, Dec. 2, 2023 – Eleven inmates of the Enugu Correctional Centre were set free on Saturday under a Federal Government Prison Decongestion Programme.

Dr Olubumi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, received the inmates after their official release from prison.

The minister said the gesture was part of measures to decongest custodial centres.

He said there were about 80,804 inmates in 253 custodial facilities nationwide with total installed capacity for less than 50,000 inmates.

The minister said the released inmates were indigent one who could pay their fines and were languishing in custody.

He said about N585,000 were contributed by some philanthropic Nigerians for their release. (GBN)
